“THE WAR DEVIL”

A NOVELIST’S NOVELTY. “BUILDING THE DEVIL’S KINGDOM.” [By Electric Telegraph—Copyrighil L United Press Association.] London, April 21. Mr Israel Zangwill, the well-known novelist and dramatist, in a remarkable article in tne Chronicle, entitled “Ine War Devil,” pictures “statesmen primed witii culture, Christianity and peace, yet condemned to building not God’s kingdom but the Devil’s. England and Germany are plajing the war game like cards, trumping each otiier’s lead, with tlie baleful shadow of Bismarck looming over Europe terror-stricken. England throws herseif into the arms oi Russia, sinking perforce to the level of her barbarian swain.” -tlr Zangwill adds: “Wo have all the cost of greatness, yet no greatness, and the same spiritual biigiit over the bulk of Europe when united Europe nerved itself to demonstrate against Montenegro. Since the Hague Conference was established, the iloodiest battles have been fought, ana the British colonies, long languorous abodes of peace, have embraced conscription and the building of battleships. Arbitrations could take us no further. Love of law must yield its toll of love. If Germany desires our territory she must have it. There is no reason other than the sword why Great Britain should possess onefourth of the globe. No law of Sinai or Calvary laid down that Australia or Egypt should be British. An All-Red route means a route of blood. Germany must also yield Alsace and Lorraine and establish an open door to her possessions, and soon this must maintain all round over the whole field of politics.”
