Two suffragettes hoisted flags on the .Duke of Fife monument and inscribed “Death or Liberty.” They took refuge in a house and bolted the door. The police broke down the door and arrested them. A large force of police protected the suffragettes from a huge threatening crowd, who shouted: “Duck them in the Thames!” After sheltering in the police station for some hours they were released.
