SCHOOL COMMITTEE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The Stratford District High School Committee met last evening, when there wore present, Messrs U. Skoglund (chairman), J. W. Boon, E. Hancock, A. Stewart, S. Clark, .). Jones, G. Smart, J. W. McMillan and T. C. Fookes. The Chairman reported the visit of the Chairman of the Taranaki Education Board to enquire into the heating arrangements of the school. Tenders for firewood were opened, and that of Mr Hooper was accepted, provided that delivery be made within 1 one month. | The Visiting Committee reported (that during the month a wire fence had been erected in the Technical School grounds at a cost of about 15s. This was necessary to protect part of (the garden, and was done at M Tyfcr’s request. One of the doors in the infant school required attention, and instructions had boon given to have it repaired. The asphalt yard had nol yet been repaired, and the Chairman thought it better to have the whole yard done over again, and obtain a price for the work. He had since been advised; however, that the work should be delayed until next summer. In the meantime, repairs would have to be done. A couple of loads of gravel were required for paths in the Technical School grounds. The Committee was also of the opinion that it would be advisable to have a few yards of gravel placed on the playground on that portion near the edge of the asphalt. At present it was very rough and dangerous. The report was adopted.
On the motion of Mr Boon, it was decided to recommend the incoming committee to attend to the courtyard in the infant school during the winter holidays. It was also decided to procure the necessary gravel for paths, i ■ Tho report of the inspectors (Messrs VV. A. Ballantyne and 11. G. Whether) stated that the records at the Stratford District High School had been kept in a very satisfactory manner. Tho regularity of attendance was very good, and the punctuality satisfactory. The timetables in uso were suitable. Methods adopted were applied with a very satisfactory amount of skill and intelligence. The head-master had evidently kept a close supervision over the work of the several classes. Order, discipline, and tone were very good. Seventyeight marks out of a possible 100 were awarded in connection with the beautifying of the school grounds and the supervision of the premises. The Secretary of the Taranaki Board wrote informing the Committee that the Overseer had been directed to report 'on 4he cosl'd’f installation of the hot-frater systeha at* tho school. A further communication from tlio same source'staled that ddm" holidays under the Taranaki Education Board would be as follows for the year 1913: — Winter holidays from May 23rd to Tune 2nd, Spring holidays from August 22nd to September Ist, Summer holidays from December 19th.to Feb- ■ ■ - n mm.; ■ (i ;r id ruary 2nd. On the ‘motion ’of Mr Smart, seconded by Mr McMillan, it was decided that the Committed place on record its appreciation of the ability shown by the Chairman during the year. Mr StcbgTund briefly returned thanks. A bonus of £5 was granted to the caretaker. The Chairman will wait on the Education Board at their next meeting, 're a hot-water service.
