DOMINION NEWS.

WOMAN WAYLAID. [Per Press Association.] Auckland, April 15. A young woman when in the Mount "Eden district on Saturday evening was waylaid by a stranger, who coming suddenly upon her dealt her a violent blow on the head, sending her to tho footpath, Fortunately others in the vicinity Heard her screams and ran to her assistance. Her assailant made off. The young woman soon recovered, and was taken home. This is not the first case of the kind reported recently. RAILWAY CLASSIFICATION. Christchurch, April 15. The Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways, whilst passing through Christchurch this morning, was interviewed with td the resolution arrived at last Sunday at a meeting of railwayman protesting against the action of tho Government in closing the avenue of .promotion from the second to the first division. Mr Herries said that apparently there must be some misconception, for just recently men who had originally come from the second division had been promoted and were being promoted. The Government had not blocked the’avenue from the second to the first division. The Government Railways Amendment Act, which had been passed last session, had merely altered the schedules of the division list in order to grant certain increases of pay, and the division system had not been changed. That amending Act also recognised the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants, and any point of difficulty could always be brought forward by it, and its agents could appear and be heard on any appeal. Tho question will be more fully discussed when a deputation from tho men waits upon the Minister on his return to Christchurch.
