A SEVERE EARTHQUAKE

London, March 16

The seismometer at West Bromwich has registered a severe earthquake 7000 miles distant, it is supposed in tho direction of the Sunda Islands.

A HUGE RESERVOIR. The opening of the Chilford reservoir will take place to-day. It is bigger than Hyde Park and capable of floating a Dreadnought. Messrs H. and A. Humphries, the engineers, have devised five pumps, each raising 40,000 gallons 25 feet from the river Lea daily. The power is derived from explosions of gas, replacing centrifugal pumps.

THE NEW SOUTH WALES LOAN

The Financial News says.that tho form of the New South Wales new security is expected to he particularly attractive to the insurance companies. It is believed that the underwriters will not upset the loan, and have left a good proportion of the issue.

CHAMBER OF SHIPPING

London, March 15

At the annual meeting of the Chamber of Shipping the president stated that the Australian Navigation Act was a direct violation of the understanding with the Federal Government in 1907, when in return for concessions the Government undertook not to promote legislation contrary to Imperial legislation. It was ludicrous that coal vessels should be exempted. It was impossible to understand how a coal steamer was more seaworthy than a wheat steamer. The regulations previously cabled were adopted.

CIVIL SERVICE ESTIMATES

The Civil Service estimates show an increase of five millions, including £400,000 for pensions, £1,157,957 for printing in connection with the National Insurance scheme, £179,986 for labour exchanges, £35,000 for the treatment of tuberculosis, and £-15,000 for compensation in the slaughter of cattle affected with tuberculosis.
