DEFENCE OF THE EMPIRE.
“ADMIRALTY’S FIRST CHOICE.” London, February 27. The Montreal Star, in commenting on Mr Pearce’s statement, reminds him of the Admiralty’s official statement, submitted to the 1909 conference, commending single navies, with unity of.training and unity of command, with oversea contributions according to the needs of its resources. This was theVAdmiralty’s first choice, and its second choice was that adopted by Australia. All that Mr Borden had done was to give the Admiralty its first choice. * CANADIAN* (NATAL DEBATE. (Received 9.5 a.m.) Ottawa, February 27. During the naval'debate Mr Charles Murphy asked how could the Admiralty approve- of the Australian policy of a fleet unit and at the same time approve of the Canadian policy of contribution to the Imperial Navy. He claims that the Cabinet first decided on the Canadian policy, and then sought to buttress their case by the Admiralty memorandum.
