PLUCKY HALF-CASTE GIRL

A BRAVE ACT. Melbourne, January 21. Details of an act of bravery by a half-caste girl, Cissy M'Leod, have been brought under the notice of the Minister for External Affairs, who has given directions that the facts should be communicated to the Royal Humane Society for investigation. The girl was in the employ of the wife of Capt. Mugg, and while walking along the jetty at Darwin one dark night, Mrs Mugg fell in. The girl, without any hesitation, jumped in after her mistress, who had sunk, and, although the tide was running out very strongly, managed to get her to one of the piles and hold her there until assistance was, obtained from a steamer, which was lying at the jetty. Mrs Mugg could not swim, and is she had not been promptly rescued the tide would have speedily carried her from the reach of human aid. The presence of sharks in the locality rendered the act an additionally meritorious one. Professor Spencer, who heard of the incident, ascertained that the rescue in such perilous conditions has not hitherto received any public recognition.
