TRAGIC FAMILY AFFAIR.
ATTEMPTED MURDER AND SUICIDE.

Auckland, February 1. A tragic occurrence is reported at Otahuhu. A labourer named Charles John Mahon attacked his wife while she was in bed, striking her on tne head with a hammer and inflicting serious injuries. Mrs Mahon states that in consequence of her husband having made unjust allegations regarding her familiarity with a young man, she loft him and stayed some time with her mother at Takapuna. She returned home yesterday, and her huband received her kindly. Dming the night he got out of bed, dressed himself, and went outside, lint returned and struck her with a hammer, and she became unconscious. When she recovered she saw the sheets covered with blood and heard her husband say, “Oh, Eva.” Her husband ran out of the house. He was found later in a very serious condition, having drunk lysol. Restorative measures were employed by a doctor but the man is not expected to recover. The parties have five children.
