GOOD BURNS AT GISBORNE!
(Per Press Association.) Gisborne, January 22
Good burns have been secured by settlers in the back blocks, who have had bush felled. Some of the district logs left from previous burns have fired, and the fires have taken charge, whereby a considerable area of country, fences in many cases have been destroyed, but the damage was not considerable, and ultimate good will result by clearing the country d logs. Several settlers had anxious nights whilst the fires were in progress. The atmosphere around Gisborne has been clouded with smoke for several days. ,
WONDERFUL WIRELESS
Wellington, January 22
A long-distance record for wireless is credited to the Ulimaroa, wh'ch, on the run from Sydney to Wellington, picked up the steamer Kanowna at a distance of 2500 miles. At the time the Ulimaroa was about 800 miles from Sydney and the Kanawna between Fremantle and Albany.
