AT DARGAVILLE

“GUARDING THE GATES OF CONSTANTINOPLE.

(Per Press Association.) Dargaville, January 21. An Austrian or Crotian ran amok last night, and created great excitement. He arrived from the country in the afternoon, and secured lodging at a boardinghouse frequented by bis countrymen. He was queer in tne evening, and was induced 1 to go to bed.

About 9 o’clock he rushed into,a billiard room in the premises, clothed only in a singlet, seized two cues, arid smashed the lamps and fittings, the people in the room fleeing for safety. The madman gained the street, wrecked the acetylene lights under the verandah, attacked a store kept by an Austrian, completely demolishing one plate glass window and damaging the other. He proceeded down the street and entered another shop, and struck the proprietor, injuring his eye So that he needed medical attention. The madman then wrecked the shbp, cases and fittings.

Here he was secured and taken to the lock-up.

At the beginning of the frenzy he was singing Balkan war songs, and declared he was guarding the gates of Constantinople.

His mental condition has not improved to-day.
