The Hon. T. Mackenzie is arranging for an official visit of New Zealander & to inspect the New Zealand at Portsmouth, when a replica of the Dominion’s coat of arms will be presented to the ship. STRENGTHENING ST. PAUL’S. The Dean and Chapter of St. Paul’s have appealed for a preliminary £SOOO to meet immediate needs for strengthening the fabric. THE STARTING GATE. Mr. Sydenham Dixon, in an article in the ‘Sporting Life,’ attributes the popularity of the starting gate in Australia compared to England, to docility as the result of climate. WASHED UP BY THE SEA. Portions of a boat and the bodies of two of the crew of the Sola, wrecked on the way to Buenos Ayres, have been recovered at the Lizards.
SHORTAGE OF ARMY REMOUNTS
The ‘Daily Mail’ says that there is an alarming deficiency in army horses, due tq‘a conflict'between the War Office arid, the Board of Agriculture. The latter is spending £50,000 annually regardless of the War Office’s requirements. It is chiefly expended in premiums, though French and German officers are certain to buy the best bred horses. There are now 100,000 fewer horses than in 1911. The proportion of cavalry horses is lower than ever.

Tho warship Melbourne, after her final successful tests, reached Plymouth, having experienced a rough passage. • MARCONI ENQUIRY. The Marconi Company has written to the Government requesting a release from their contract owing to expense, through the indefinite delay preceding its ratification, and serious detriment owing to the erroneous statements which have professedly been based on the evidence before the committee, and reproduced in trie newspapers without the Company having an opportunity of refutation. The Company offers, when investigations have been concluded, to construct stations on such terms as may be agreed upon.
SERIOUS MOTOR CAR COLLISION
Berlin, January 20,
A motor car with four officers collided with a carriage at Leipzig. Three were killed and the fourth seriously injured. It is reported that ihe chauffeur committed suicide.
