Wellington, January 15. Los Angelos was scratched for the Wellington Cup this afternoon.
THE REEFTON FIRE,
Reefton. January 15
The enquiry into the fire at McMahon’s stables was y resumed. P. Reilly, who, it was said, offered Comedian for sale, and who left the hotel to visit Comedian’s stall early o the morning of the fire, deposed that he knew nothing from the time he arrived at Reefton till Saturday, when he left. His mind was a perfect blank. T. White, Hokitika, stated that He heard' from a third person that whatever stall Armstrong waa in would have been burned. He cculd not remember the name of the person who told him this. Armstrong’s owner and the trainer of another horse had bad feeling between them. This was some years ago.
Other witnesses gave unimportant evidence, though tending to show the
suddenness of the rise of the fire
The jury, after some time in retire* ment in the fire enquiry, brought in a verdict, with one dissentient, of “Wilfully set on fire by some person or persons unknown.” The enquiry extended over five days i
