SUCCESS OF THE DEFENCE ACT. (Received 9.55 a.m.) Capetown, January 9. Mr. Beyers, interviewed at Pietermaritzburg, said he was delighted at the practical effects of the Defence Act, the calculations for which were originally based on a total of 7000 for the first year, hut 25,000 proved nearer the mark. Many were anxious to avoid a ballot as a slur ou the community. Mr. Beyers, is in favour of sending six officers to England to qualify as air pilots, although aviation would be difficult on the high veldt.
