Tlie Cabinet lias commuted the death sentence on Egan for wounding with intent at Redfern to ton years’ penal servitude. A cable message dated Sydney, September 20, says :—James Egan has been arrested on a charge of (shooting Ids wife, Ruth Egan, who had left him, Mrs Maria Johnson (her sister), with whom Mrs Egan had been living at Alexandria, and Charles Waite, who was boarding with them. Mrs Egan was shot in the right breast, and her condition is serious. Mrs Johnson was shot in the neck, and it is not likely that her would is dangerous. Waite had two wounds in the hip, and is likely to recover. Sydney, January 8. The death sentence on O’Grady for murdering his wife has been commuted to one of penal servitude for life, on account of O’Grady’s previous good character and the Judge’s report that there was an element of provocation. A Sydney cablegram dated November 5 says:—A tragedy is reported from Annandale. Albert O’Grady, a motor mechanic, accused his wife of infidelity. He quarrelled with his wife, whom he left on Saturday, and returned to-day. O’Grady desired a reconciliation, but his wife declined, and went to her bedroom, where an infant was lying. O’Grady followed and cut the throats of both with a razor. He then surrendered to the police. After his crime, O’Grady utilised a neighbour’s telephone to inform the police. He stated that he had been maddened by his wife striking him with a poker during a quarrel.
