NEW NAVAL ERA.
THE PACIFIC NAVAL BASE
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) (Received 9.55 a.m.) Sydney, December 31.
New 7 Year’s Day will see tne last Imperial flagship doing duty in Sydney harbour, when H.M.S. Drake departs for England, lbs Commonwealth cruiser, Australia, replaces her as soon as possible. The Herald says that some misapprehension apparently exists as to Auckland replacing Sydney r.s the Imperial base in the Southern Pacific. As a matter of fact, although such a change has been suggested ho determination was reached by the Admi alty as to making Auckland the new 7 base. It is expected in naval circles that if New 7 Zealand elects not to join the Commonwealth naval defence, the Dominion would have her own local fleet, but Sydney would continue to maintain tiio present statues and more as a naval base.
