NEW CONVENT OPENED.

(Per Press Association.) Pahiatua, December 9

A new convent was opened yesterday afternoon by Dean O’Shea, A icarGeneral and Administrator of the Arch-Diocese'of Wellington. There was a 'large gathering of the, public, and many 1 visiting- priests. The building is for’ the u&e of the Brigidine Sisters, a teaching order. A collection taken amounted to £IOO. The building cost £llOO. Father T. McKenna, parish priest, was . highly complimented on the result of his efforts.

Referring to religious education, Dean O’Shea declared the foundation of all true moral training was religious education. Ho declared that so long as the present system was recognised, Roman Catholics were prepared to build their own schools, and make any sacrifices' for th'ei'r faith, a faith which they had received as a priceless heritage frbnr their forefathers. The speaker alluded to the Bible in Schools League, which he said was a very powerful and active body, whose aim wak to introduce a Rible text book into the State schools. It would only be another form of sectarianism at the public expense, towards which Catholics would have to pay, and it would give a form of religion which would be obnoxious to them.
