HAWERA A. AND P. SHOW.

MORNING OF THE FIRST DAY

(Evening Post Special Reporter.)

Hawera, November 20

A hot sun and a clear blue sky have made a midsummer day for the openinn of the Egmont Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s show, promising ideal weather for People’s l)a\ (Thursday). Advancement and development generally in the district are reflected in a similar expansion of this popular show. The entries in more than one section have been doubled. The cattle classes show an increase in entries of over thirty on the previous year. Jerseys are strong; Ayrshires come a good .second; but Hol-stein-l'Tiesclans suffer in numerical comparison. Black and whites, however, have scored well. In the butter-fat. and casein competitions Mr V. W. Nowell’s Perfection, a Hawera cow, has to its credit an easy win in both competitions for cheese cows and butter cows, and, curiously, the three placed cows occupy the same position* in both competitions, though this, of course,i does not occur with “also startecls.” “I have never met a hotter class,” remarked a Jersey man patting the proud winner' of the “chiefly Jersey” cow class. “Blue Bell VIII.” conies direct from Canterbury, and has been awarded a first, with Mr W. V. Harkness’s Mayday second, and Mr W. hi. Bayly’s Ruth IT. third. Molina’s General makes his first appearance in the ring, and his owners are not expecting him to disgrace them. The Stratford district, in fact, is well represented in both. Jerseys and Ayrshires, but awards are as yet coming in slowly.

Local dog fanciers have, also responded to the call of the show, and arc playing an important part in swelling the entries to 170. “Laverock” is ol opinion there should bo some reel tickets appearing soon on a few.

Various competitions are being run off to-day. To-morrow, the wire jumping, leaping, dual jumping and high jumping competit’ons eventuate. .Entries for these popular events arc large and excellent sport is promised. Numerous side show's are calculated to entice their hundreds. A laughing gallery (reminiscent of Christchurch Exhibition), a real live circus, merry-go-rounds, ocean-waves, cheap jacks, and clairvoyants are among the motley throng. Mr Barney Fearon, esconsed in a beautiful striped tent, assures your representative that he has no potato peelers for sale, but, is merely present in the interests of the Stratford A. and P. Association, and is doing good business.
