STEAMER GERTIE STRANDED.

IN THE MANAWATU RIVER

Wellington, October 5

Messrs Levin and Company’s steamer Gertie sank in the Manawatu river about six miles from Foxton yesterday, when inward bound from West port. She grounded evidently in om of the shallows caused by the recent flood, and after some of the coal had been shifted forward .she floated ofi and commenced to go up the river. It was soon ,found she was makiiif water and settling t.own by the head and she soon took the ground ant remained fast. It is thought pro-habit that a scam opened when tho vesse, first grounded.

A. centifugal pump has been fitted, and pumping operations commenced and it is hoped to float her off and navigate her to the Foxton wharf.
