MALTESE AS COLONISTS.

.A letter from General Barron, Governor of Tasmania, published in the Malta Chronicle a few weeks ago, formed the subject of general conversation and press comment on the island. The writer states that the arrival of fifteen Maltese emigrants has created a demand for fifty more, but lie recommends the Maltese to seek a home in Northern Australia, thus unconsciously supporting the recommendation of the president of the Immigration League of Australasia. A correspondent of the Daily Telegraph says: “The Maltese, a semitropical, sober, industrious, and thrifty people, are perhaps the only white British subject race which could colonise in North Australia. We have' a terribly large surplus population, and it would be a pity if it were lost ,to the flag, but a financed scheme of emigration would have to lie found which would be advantageous alike to Australia and Malta.”
