o FIRE AT MARTON
Marten, September 17. The Junction Hotel, Marten, owned by Mr Robert Hunt, had a narrow escape! from destruction by fire at 2 o’clock this morning. The billiard saloon owned by Mr Hunt and leased by Mr A. W. Hurst, together with the contents of the hairdressing saloon and tobacconist shop, acre totally destroyed. A washhouse and storeroom and contents adjacent to the hotel wen* also -destroyed. The hotel was saved by the efforts of the stationmaster and staff. The hotel was insured for £ISOO. The damage is estimated at about £SOO. The billiard room, etc., valued at £IOO was insured for £250. Mr Hurst lias a policy on the stock in the Guardian Office of £l5O. DEATH BY POISONING. Christchurch, September 17. Thomas Anderson Robertson, aged 49, married, died in the city last night as the result of poisoning. He had a habij: of taking some drug for indigestion, and it is believed bo took rough-on-rats by mistake. \ •
