THE MDIBS' TOURNAMENT
(Per Press Association.)
Christchurch, September 9
The second clay's play of the New Zealand ladies' hockey tournament was carried through at Sydenham Park to-day in perfect weather. If anything it was too warm. The grounds, however, had much improved, and the conditions of play were much better than on Saturday. The matches played resulted as follows/ B Section. Canterbury A 7, v. West Coast 0. Wellington 1 v. Hawke's Ray 5. Wanganui 4, v. Butter 1. A Section. Nelson 3, v. Poverty Hay 2. Taranaki 2, v. Otago 2. Manawatu 0, v. Wairarapa 2. The match', Canterbury A v. West Coast, resulted in an easy win for the former by 7 goals to nil. Miss K. Krute, of the Waimari Club, who has just made her debut in iivterprovmeial hockey, played a rattling fine game for Canterbury, and scored no fewer, i than four goals. Miss M. Pcarce, the redoubtable Kaiapoi champion, scored i two goals. Of the Coast players, Miss Kin* (centre half) stood out proWmently, especially in the first spell. The three-quarters were also good. The Wanganui v. Bullet match contained plenty of incident. One or the first events was the temporary disablement of the captain of the Buller team, Miss Greenland. Play was lively throughout, and though Wanganui had far and away the best of it, Buller put up a very spirited defence. Manawatu v. WaiWpa was a less interesting match. Altogether play on both sides was uneventful. Wairarapa ended by getting two goals to Manawatu's nil. The match between Nelson and i ovBrty Bay provided some of the fastest Id cleanest hockey the tournament is likely to show. Nelson played better than on Saturday, for only admirable physical condition on both sides albsv--1 the game to be taken at such a toco. Of all the players, Miss Whitcivell the Nelson captain, stood out as ;he best all round. Her work in attack and defence was cool and well-ihought-out. Miss Ingram, Miss Smith, ffiss Winn and Miss Evans also workid well. The Poverty Bay players breed the pace throughout. l - The match between Wellington and lawke's Bay was also fast. Hawke's Jay showed to better advantage than m Saturday, some combination having ►een added to the individual skill hown. The game was more even than he score would suggest, and almost mtil the end it seemed possible that lawke's Bay might equalise matters. THE TARANAKI MATCH.
Christchurch, Septemlier 8. ?Taranaki opened b\ working the ball o Otago's circle, but attempts at hooting were nullified by the Otago palkeeper. Taranaki made further ot assaults on Otago's goal, but the oalkeeper proved too good. Mi&s Heaver instituted a good rush, and a »re for Taranaki seemed imminent, ut the shooting failed. Taranaki! coninued the attack, but another-shot at oal was missed. Shortly afterwards, [iss Roberts (Taranaki) was hit in the We, and play was stopped, but the [fared girl continued to play. Otago ere awarded a free hit for "sticks," nd brought the ball down with a m, and Miss L. Bennett shot a fine oal. From a throw-in the Taranaki rele was invaded, but after hot cxlanges Tiiranaki broke away, and. iter a good run Miss Roberta centred nd Miss Cleaver scored. One all. t half time play was in Taranaki':'. >rritory. Otago led off again ngessively on resuming, but good pa~sg by Taranaki got the ball away. rush by Taranaki's left second was )t stopped, and Miss McEwan scored ter a big rush from the circle.
