INDUSTRIAL UNREST.
ENGLISH STRIKE SPREADING. London, May 28. The grocers' assistants have instructed their executive to take steps to- secure a minimum wage. The Gasworks and General Labourers' Union Conference at Sunderland withdrew from the General Trade Union Federation, because it had not received strike pay during the recent strikes and lock-outs. . Six hundred labourers at the hairfield Yards, Govan, have struck for an increase of Jd per hour, and recognition of the National Amalgamation of Labour. SHIPPING HELD UP. London, May 28. Meat unloading continues. Eleven hundred police are protecting the workers, who consist of foremen, tally clerks, and a force of meat porters from Manchester. The troops ara in readiness if needed, while firemen at the'dock gates are prepared to quench exc'table men. Various convoys reached Smithfield unmolested. Eight hundred naval reservists volunteered to discharge vessels, over two hundred of which are held up. The Strike Committee" withdrew facilities given for working refrigerators and have requested foreign unions not to handle diverted ships. It has issued a manifesto warning the Government againsfc repressive measures, otherwise extreme action will be taken. The committee states that it will not treat with sectional employers.

MISUSE OF PUBLIC MONEY. (Received 29, 10.20 a.m.) London, May 28. Mr McKenna has summoned tho strike committee to a conference at tho Home Office to-day. The police
are patrolling the docks. .Business at Smithheld is almost normal. There is no difficulty in distributing in the metropolis owing to police conveying meat. The strike, leaders are attempting to stop refrigerating machinery in the steamers and cold stores. Ben Til-let, in a manifesto, urges the carmen to strike. He protests that the action of the authorities in using police and soldiers as scabs and scab protectors is a misuse of public money.
