WHANGAMOMONA NOTES.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) Our township at present is hardly ! approachable, the roads both nays | are in a desperate state, and the big ! >vaggcns have had to reduce the size of loads considerably, the freight ac- : count of this district would startle people, if properly compiled and published. For instance, one gentleman here lately got a line of goods from Month Canterbury. The freight from Timaru to the 33-mile siding was £-1 2s 'id, and c 1 >l- freight from the siding to Whanga (about six miles) was £5 0s Gd. The carters do not make much over expenses, either. The road is so bad, and upkeep of teams and wag-

gons so great, (mat it leaves the carter a very small margin. However, we are hoping that before another month is over, goods will he delivered by train to the Mnngere Road, thus doing away with the terrible Whanga Saddle as far as heavy traffic is concerned.

Mr. W. iNelson, of Mr. I). B. Howard's Kohuratahi staff, met with a nasty accident iast week. He was riding home in the dark, and when passing two stray horses, received from one a heavy kick on the ankle, the braise still giving Mr. Nelson considerable pa in. This is the second accident of this nature during the last fortnight. Mr. M. Cornwall has lei':- on a holiday trip down the coast. He expects to be absent about a fortnight. The Bank of Australasia's new building will he ready for occupation next month, the papcrhanger starts on the inside finishing touches this week. It is our most handsome building, and g;ves a new tone to oar township:, which, in the past, has boasted little better than plain galvanised iron slions and buildings. On Friday night we are to have something new in Dhc »';ry of a social evening. The committee have arranged as original a programme ar possible, and tickets have been selling freely. The proceeds are In <v<] of an organ for the local Sunday-school.

1 hear that the new residence for the local schoolmaster is to be commenced shortly, The size of the school now and the scarcity of house accommodation makes the erection of a school residence a very necessary undertaking.

Mr. Peter Lawson is back herefrom the hospital, and is far enough recovered to be able to work aeain.

Mr. B. W. Hodder, of this town, has received word from headquarters of their acceptance of his tender for the new station buildings here. His enterprise is to be commended, and Ave wish him success.

Mr. Shields, of Mangere Road, has returned after a month's holiday in Hawke's 13ay.

The Kohuratahi ladies' ball takes place on Friday week, May 31st. Even the mud would not keep people away from this popular annual gathering. Miss Calgher arrived home yesterday after an extended holiday to New Plymouth.

Mr. J. McCluggage is at present paying a'short visit here.
