Waipawa, May 17. Mr George E. Haggitt, recently promoted to the managership of the Feilding branch of the Bank of Australasia, was last night entertained at a large and reprosqatativ* .gathering. The Mayor presided and alluded to Mr Haggitt's business ability and popularity, and presented him and Mrs Haggitt with a solid silver tea service, Inot water kettle, and a silvermounted oak salver suitably inscribed. Several prominent men voiced the opinion that Mr Haggitt's removal was a loss to the district, eulogised his ser-j vices to the town and congratulated him on his deserved promotion. Te Kuiti, May 15. A meeting held last night formed a branch of tne Sports Protection League. The organising secretary (Mr Paape) delivered an address on the aims and objects of the league. The Mayor presided. Considerable iute4> est was shown, and a large membership promised. Referring to the Auckland league, Mr Paape said that if possible they would work together; they (had no desire to conflict.
Feilding, May 16
At the inquest at Halcombe to-day on the death of Mr It. K. Bradbury, clerk of the Halcombe Town Board, the evidence showed that the deceased had attempted to commit suicide by poison. He had stated that bis office had been robbed, and that he had informed a friend that lie intended to commit suicide. The police evidence was to the effect that there was no sign of any robbery, but that the books of the Town Board showed about £37 collected and not hanked. A verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane was returned. Wellington, May 16.
The City Council to-night adopted tlh« report, of the legislation committee to the effect that the Local Government Bill in its present form would destroy the independence of the city, and leave its finances and affairs at the mercy of a constituency with which it had no community of interest. The committee was of opinion that the Bill would entail upon the city a large increase in its contribution to (hospital and charitable aid, and a new charge in respect of education. The committee could not see that any benefit would accrue to the city in any way comparable to the grave risks involved. The statement of receipts and expenditure of the consolidated fund for the year ended March 31st, 1912, appears in to-night's Gazette The principle items are:—Receipts: Balance at the beginning of the year, £586,483; ordinary revenue, £10,721,387; territorial revenue, £248,791; national endowment revenue, £62,365; miscellaneous sums transferred to consolidated fund, -£13,175; debentures renewed, £196,200; miscellaneous, £15,541; total, £11,843,844. Expenditure: Permanent appropriations, £3,866,618; annual appropriations, £6,553,750; transferred to Public Works Fund, £500,000; debentures renewed, £190,200; balance at end of year, £807,275 ; total, £11,853,844.
