Wellington, May 8. James Purcell O’Brien, who was found guilty of cpmirion assault, was sentenced to one year’s imprisonment, to be followed by three years’ detention for reformative treatment. Dunedin, May 8. * At the Police Court to-day, before Mr Bartholomew, S.M., two brothers, James Alexander Greig and Peter, Henry Greig, carters, were changed with the theft of timber valued at £5, the property of Hogg and Co. Peter Greig was further charged with the theft of timber, valued the property of Hogg and Co. ’The evidence for the prosecution was that the accused loaded timber at the wharf, hut instead' of delivering it in Hogg and Co.’s yard, sold it to varioif s''people. Both accused reserved their defence, and were committed for. .trial. Bail was allowed,'Marncs Greig ini his own recognisance for £IOO, and two sureties of £SO each. Peter Greig was allowed bail in Ins' own recognisance of £2OO on the first charge, and £2OO, with an additional two sureties of £IOO each, on the second charge. Thomas Henderson, a young man with several aliases, was to-day found guilty on nine charges of opening telegrams sent from Fred. Jewell to T. Phillips. Evidence was given by two telegraph messengers that they went with the telegrams addressed to Phillips, and not knowing his address went into a tobacconist’s shop to enquire. Accused was there, and said he would take the telegrams, as Phillips was his cousin. He opened them and took notes in a pocketbook, and afterwards sealed them up with! stickers, which he persuaded the boy to get from the telegraph office. Mr Justice Chapman inflicted a sentence •of eighteen months’ imprisonment, with bal'd labour.
