A serious motor acciidcn’t which ended fatally occurred at Longbuni, lour miles from Palmerston, late last night, whereby a railway clerk named Field lost his life. Field was chatting with the stationraias’fier, Downs, in the road opposite the railway 'station when he was knocked down by a motor car coining towards town and thrown right off the road. Dr Martin went down in a car to the stone of the accident and after temporarily attending to the injured man brought him to a private hospital where- lie died this morning. He sustained a fracture at the base -of the skull, bruises in various parts of the body and ho was bleeding profusely from tile Cars, nose and mouth. 'Christchurch, April 17.

Mr E. R. Waite, curator of the Christchurch Museum, has accepted Professor David’s invitation to join the 'Aurora’s sub-Antarctic wcanogir'aphic cruise, leaving Sydney 'on May sili. The invitation was conveyed to Mr Waite by Professor David, who said that Dr. Mawson 'was most anxious that ho riiould accompany the ship as ,biologist in charge. Mr Waite states that flic object of the cruise is mainly to determine the biological contents of the sub-Ant-arctic Ocean, such information being of the highest 'importance in connection ,among others things, with the food of economic fishes. The animals are to ho secured with various

The sub-An tactic 'area includes the Auckland, Campbell, Antipodes, and the Macquarie Island;;, but 'Mr Waite does not anticipate that the last-named group will be torched, as Dr Mawteon has Ready established a .shore station there. Mr Wlaite will probably leave'nex t Thursday for Sydney.
