(Received 18, 9.40 a.m. Sydney, April 18. The Lord Mayor has cabled met sages of condolence to the Mayor & New York, and the Lord Mayor o London, on the international appalling, loss of the Titanic. THE G OYERNOR’S CONDOLENCES Auckland, April 17. The. wreck of the Titanic was feel vngJy referred to to-day by the Governor in his 'Speech ,a't the opening of a branch of the Overseas Club. The Governor has despatched the fhllowh'irg mrstengc to the Secretary of State for the Colonies: “My Government and the people of Now Zealand -are- deeply grieved at the terrible raf-astrophe that lias overtaken their friends, both British ami American, in the loss of the Titanic. Kindly convey Now Zealand’s grief at fine appalling loss of valuable lives,—lslington.” ,
Ohowds throughout the day thronged the office of the AVhite Star Company and tbe newspaper offices, making anxious enquiries. There were many pathetic scenes in towns troug'iout the United States and Canada. THE CARPATHIA DELAYED. It is represented that the late arrival of those on board the Carpa’tli-ia is due to thick icefields. NAVAL ASSISTANCE. Air Taft has ordered the cruisers Salem and Chester to proceed to the scene of the disaster. A number of revenue cutters have also been dev spatched. NO OTHERS RESCUED. London, April 17. Wireless messages from various ships on the scene of the disaster make it clear that none were rescued beyond these picked up by the. Carpathian PERISHING FROAI EXPOSURE. The captain of the Parisian cantos that if any of tb\ose wrecked clung to the wreckage they must have perished from exposure. A FUTILE WARNING. The liner Tourain on Wednesday entered the icefield, and quitted it mi Thursday. She warned the Titanic on Friday, receiving the captain’s thanks. \ THE BUILDERS’ THEORY. It is officially stated .by Alossrs Haidand and Wolff, who bub'lt the Titanic, that after colliding, tho Titanic must have swerved and careered along the edge of the jee floe, by which her side was ripped open. Otherwise the bulkheads Would have Raved her. RELIEF FUNDS OPENED. Eight representatives of the firm wore aboard. Many entertainments in Southampton have been abandoned. The Mayor has ,opened a relief fund for the families of the crew. ROYAL CONDOLENCES. The King, Queen Mary, Queen Alexandra and tire Kaiser condoled with the victims and their relatives. The newspapers- are opening relief funds. COMPENSATION FOR THE DEAD. The owners’ compensation to the disowned seamen’s relatives is computed at £IOO,OOO. The Titanic’s .wireless apparatus ceased to work two hours after the collision. SEVENTY-NINE MEN SAVED. Seventy-nine, men were saved, of whom sixty-eiglit belong to the crow, who were necessary to man the boats. THE BOAT ACCOMMODATION. The Daily Mail says that the Titanic provided 100 per cent, more bo'at accommodation than the Board of Trade requirements, but the provision proved altogether inadequate. A LOSS OF FIVE MILLIONS. The Financial Times estimates the total loss at five millions, including the vessel, cargo and mails, life and other insurances. COMMUNITY STUNNED. New Y'ork, April 17. The community is stunned by the Usaster. Scarcely a large city in the States is not contributing a victim. Major Butt, Mr Taft’s chief military aide-de-camp, is among the missing. SEARCHING THE ICE FIELD. The Carpathia is slowly traversing the icefield. The Virginian arrived too late, the Carpathia being first on the, scene. The newspapers declare that the Titanic had insufficient boats. Tho second, third, fourth and fifth officers and the junior Marconi operator were saved. SPEED MANIA CONDEMNED. (Received 18, 8.5 a.m.) London, April 17. The “Times” questions whether it is not time to call a halt in mammoth. steamer construction made for speed competition, and the selection of a track dangerous at certain seasons, when a. safer route exists. The paper appeals for a. saner and sounder pub’ic opinion on the subject. A GERMAN ECHO. (Received 18, 8.5 a.m.) Berlin, April 17. The papers condemn the rage for rpcerl, and describe tho titanic’ voyage ais an attempt to break the Olympic’s records. German underwriters 10-t £75,000 on tho Titanic. German ships have been instructed to make the. southern route to- America.
EXPRESSIONS OF SYMPATHY. Dunedin, April 17. Sir Jpseph Ward ibis afternoon cabled to Mr Asquith, expressing great sorrow at the terrible lo'ss of life occasioned by the foundering of the Titanic. Wanganui, April 17. A large meeting of ratepayers who had assembled 'to bear a speech by a candidate for the Mayoralty to-night passed a resolution of sympathy hi connection with the Titanic wreck. ,A copy of the resolution is to o forwarded to the Prime Minister. Gisborne, April 17. Very feeling reference was made to the Titanic disaster by Mr J. B. Kirk, of the Chamber of Commerce, at a meeting held to-night to decide on what form’ a presentation to Sir Jas. Carroll should take,, and on Mr Kirk’s motion a resolution expressive of the sympathy of the citizens of GSsborne with th(o.se .bereaved was recorded. The Mayor was requested to wire the Prime Minister to transmit the motion to the proper quarter. Tho motion was carried in silence, those .present standing, and the meeting adjourned as a further expression of sympathy. Christchurch, April 17.
At a meeting called by Mr TI. Holland, a candidate for the Mayoralty, to-night a resolution was proposed by Mr L. M. Tsitt, M.P., and passed, expressing profound sorrow .and sympathy with the bereaved relatives of the crew and the. passengers of the Titanic, and placing on record the meeting’s admiration pf the gallantconduct of the officers and men in placing so many of the women, and children in the beats. •Dunedin, April IS. A mammoth benefit in aid of the Titanic sufferers was held in "Brydonc Hall last night. CRYING FOR NEWS. ~ (Received 18, 11.50 a.m.) ' London, April .17. Pathetic scenes continue outside the White Star offices. Usual booking!:; are not being interrupted, and there has .been no cancellation of passages. Fifty relatives 'stayed . outside the Cook spur Street office all night. Wives and children of the crew arc crowding at the .Southampton office awaiting the .names of those ■'saved and crying and hogging for information. The crowd includes five, sisters, the husband of each of 'whom is aboard. There .will .be a memorial service at St. Faults <on Friday. The Lord Mayor has ‘opened a Mansion House fund. Ho suggests that- every 7 newspaper in the Kingdom should acknowledge don art lions and in a week they could probably false an ad'equ'ate fund. There .were three thousand racks of mails on the Titanic, including 1586 sacks from London. ' Alexander Carlisle, the Titanic’ls builder, opines that if she strhek by the stem the masts- would probably be buckled and it would he impassible to send wireless messages. In future vessels would probably have a smaller number of bulkheads, the doors of which would be closed 'at sunset anld sunrise and have increased boat accommodation. The Parliaments of Denmark, Sweden, Belgium and Capetown passed resolutions -of sympathy in 'reference to the Titanic disaster.
