SHEEP DOG TRIALS.
THE ENG MO NT CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. THE JUDGE’S COMMENTS. Mr W. Whyte, who acted as judge throughout the trials, has kindly contributed the subjoined notes on winners in Classes 11., 111., and IV.:— Class 11. i Chum—Oast to right; slack to start, then struck out free and headed nicely in Imin 7sec. Brought back fairly steady in good line, but dog a little on one side. Drove steady in good style; yarded nicely at first attempt. Flip—Cast to left. Went out very free in good line; headed quietly in 57 sec. A little rash at first whilst pulling, then brought back steady in good line. Drove a little rash. Had some trouble with sheep at pen, but yarded very firmly in good style. • Rag—Cast to right. Went out free in good line, but stopped just on nearing sheep. Headed rash in 47sec. Was a bit rash at first whilst pulling, but did very well for the rest of the journey. Drove to pen only middling, and barked, but yarded in excellent style. Mac—Oast to right, taking directions badly, then got away and headed very neatly in Imin ssec. Bringing back let a little off line, dog overrunning sheep at times, but did bettor nearing homo. Driving to pen barked and zigzagged about. At yard dog too anxious, but very firm, and yarded very well. Tip—Cast to left. Crossed his lino and tacked about. Headed close, lime Imin ssec. Brought back rash in bad line, and unsteady at ring. Driving, let sheep to the right and then lot them botl to yard. Yarded very nicely. Class 111. Rag—Drove his charge in good style and splendid control through all the obstacles, and yarded excellent- • !y. _ ; Flip—Drove in good line through all the hurdles and had a little difficulty in getting them back into position. Was very firm at pen, and yarded first attempt. Boss—Started slack; let sheep to ' left and made poor recovery; man doing work the dog should have done. Dog a little slack at first hurdles, but Idrovo on good line and through the second hurdles first try. Driving, let sheep out of hand. A bit rash at pen. Yarded well. Glen—Started steady, but got into difficulty; dog not always in control of sheep. Got through first hurdles fair; slack in driving and putting through second hurdles’ Driving not good; control of sheep too slack. Fairly good at yarding. Tip—Man and dog did not start for considerable time after signal given, and mado no effort to take control of sheep. Got through first hurdles at first attempt, then drove in a good line, but dog tacking about behind man instead of on either side. Through second hurdles in a quiet sort of way. Drove rash near pen. At yard lot round; not good control of sheep. Yarded-fair. Class IV. Wobbler and Tar—Started steady and drove in good line through both sets of hurdles at first attempt. In last lap, one dog barked otherwise doing all that could be desired. Yarding very good. Chum and Joe—Drove through both hurdles in good careful style, but let sheep get past the flags, and through one dog being a little slow, had some difficulty in getting them back. Yarded with ease. Joy and Smoodge .—Driving, let sheep run about too much. Man helping dogs more than was necessary. Got through first hurdles fair. Driving to second hurdles, let sheep too far off lino to left; kept sheep very steady, but man doing the work of left-hand dog. Driving to pegs and pen very good. At yard one dog crossed to do the work of the other, also one dog’ would keep boring in on sheep. Yarding very good. Rip and Goose.—Let sheep a little off line, dog on right side being too wide; the same d°g coming wrongly round hurdles to help the other. Missed second hurdles, both dogs getting a bit mixed up, but getting through hurdles eventually. Drove to pen rashly, and let badly off line. Penned very good at first attempt. Mung and Rag.—Let sheep bolt about, both sometimes doing the work of one. Got through first hurdles good. Drove in a fair line and put through second hurdles very good. Driving to pen let sheep up the hill; one dog very slack; failed to yard.
