SWIMMING NOTES.

The committee of the Swimming Club met lust night, and put through a good deal of important uus ness. A vote of thanks was passed to Mr. J. Masters, wiio, it was announced, on being approached-on the •matter by a sab-committee set up for the purpose of procuring a cup, had presented a trophy for the champion cup competition recently discussed. Tne entrance fee for the six races for the cup was fixed at half a crown.

A start will be made with the 150 yards’ distance on tho afternoon of February 22ud, entries closing on February 20th. It was decided that tho winner of the cup receive a medal valued at two guineas and tho run-ner-up a trophy valued at lifteen shillings. „ One distance for the cup will be got off every other Thursday. Tiie elate of the big open night carnival was lixed at March Ist. A local carnival is to be held on the afternoon of March 7th, at which special consideration will be given to ladies. Mr. W. P. Kirkwood, ivho presided over the meeting, promised to present a trophy for a ladies’ race. Mr. E. Kivell, secretary, was appointed honorary swimming instructor to ladies’ classes.

It is thought that probably the ladies would form a committee and run a carnival under their own direction, receiving help in certain matters from the men. Such a meeting would be pleasurable to all concerned.

The club is desirous of fostering swimming among ladies, and have appointed Mr. Kivell instructor, so that any lady desirous or improving herself by tuition can receive the necessary instruction by application to Mr. Kivell, who has expressed himself willing to do all in his power to make the ladies expert. Several ladies arc already receiving tuition at Mr. Kivell’s hands.
