BAND CONTEST.
NORTH ISLAND ASSOCIATION’S v MEETING. A SUCCESSFUL OPENING. ’ (Por Press Association.) Gisborne, February 12. Brilliant weather favoured the inauguration of the fifteenth annual contest under the North Island Brass Bands Association, which is taking place here. There was a very large and enthusiastic attendance at the Park racecourse this afternoon, .whore a reception and garden party was 'hold. After traversing the main streets the visiting bands entrained to the Park, the Mayor and the chairmen of the various local bodies, including Mr Hunter Brown, of Wairoa, welcomed the bands, Lieut.-Col. Pringle, of Wanganui, on behalf of the Association, and also E. R. B. Holbein, secretary of the Association, responding....* Each band.in turn then played one of its own selections, a|id later the hands together, under the
baton of Lieut. Herd, gave the “Conqueror” march. During tho afternoon the visiting bauds were entertained bv the ladies of the district.
Solo competitions in connection with the hand contest were commenced at His Majesty’s Theatre to-night. According to visiting bandsmen, the attendance constituted a record.
In tho E flat soprano cornet solo competition there were six competitors. Results:—W. Summers (Wanganui City) 43 points, 1; W. Crombic (Waihi Federal) "42, 2 ; F. C. Wilkinson (Gisborne City) '4O, 3. Other entrants were: L. Neighbours (Westport Garrison) 39, B. Bowator (Palmerston North) 37, A. Lethorby (Whangarei Municipal) 36. The euphonium solo attracted nine competitors. Results:—W. Harris (Gisborne City) 45 points, 1; C. Mills (Waihi Federal) 44, 2; A. E. Fulljaro.es (Whangarei Municipal) 43, 3. Other entrants: W. T. Gray (Wanganui City) 39, H. McCa skill (Westport Garrison) 37, A. A. Whit-in (Wanganui City) 37, R. Tender (Gisborne City) 36, J. Harvey (Palmerston North) 36, I. Elder (Masterton Municipal) 35. The judge, Lieut. Herd, expressed himself very highly pleased with the euphonium section. It was, he said, a veritable labour of love to judge tho work of at least three of the competitors. With regard to tho soprano section, Mr Herd noticed the lack of brightness. The cash takings for the day amounted to over £llO, and to this can bo added the s.alos of season tickets, and from other sources another £IOO.
