ALLEGED THEFT.
(Per Press Association.! Auckland, February 8. Hunt! E. Bergmann, a wharf .'worker, was giving evidence in Court in a case a-few days ago when Detective Powell identified a hair Bergmann carried in his hand as one of six dor.cn which disappeared from i/no steamer Maheno in December last. Bergmann appeared this morning charged with the theft of 68 felt hats valued at £23, the property of Macky, Logan, Caldwell and Go. The hats were of a quality that coidd not have been otherwise obtained in Auckland. Bergmann pleaded not gpilty, but admitted he got four hats in some coal amongst the Maheno’s cargo. He was committed for trial, receiving bail in his own bond of £IOO and two sureties of £SO each.
