A BANKRUPT CHARGED. tPer Press Association.) Auckland, February 2. At the Police Court this afternoon, James Scott Lennox, till recently a sharebroker in Auckland, was charged that being a person who was on: August 9th, 1911, adjudged bankrupt', ho had by rash and hazardous speculations brought about the said bankruptcy. The accused was proceeded against on the information of the Official Assignee (Mr W. S. Fisher),! who said accused’s schedule showed liabilities of £3506 and assets £1950,! leaving a nominal deficiency of £3356. As far as could be ascertained, accused’s liabilities amounted to £6552, and the realised.assets to £269, while his seat on the Stock Exchange though a doubtful asset might be put down at £SOO, leaving a deficiency, of £5783, The estate, under most favourable circumstances, would not pay more than Is 6d in the £. Accused had been doing profitable and legitimate brokering business, but he had apparently embarked on a career of speculation which had resulted in heavy losses. Over-selling was also alleged against accused.
Lennox, who reserved his defence, was committed for trial. PREMIUM BONDS. Wellington, February 2. ADULTERATED BREAD. Ashburton, February 2. ! William Forsyth Gibson was to-day fired £5 and costs on a charge of selling adulterated bread (containing alum). Counsel pleaded that defendant recently came from Scotland, where alum was u§ed in the bakers’ business, and was unaware of the law here. MANSLAUGHTER CHARGE. Christchurch, February 3. In connection with the fatal accident which occurred in Cathedral Square, near Broadway’s Corner, on the afternoon of Friday, January 19th, when Thomas Ryan was knocked down and run over by a motor car, his injuries proving fatal in a few hours, an information has been laid charging the driver of the car, Reginald Blunden, of Bennetts, with manslaughter. The case will lie heard next Thursday afternoon.
