London, January 24. Air. McKenna, replying to a deputation, promised a Bill dealing with demoralising literature on lines of the report made by a select committee in 191)8. AN APPEAL TO ELECTORS. London, January 24. A firm, claiming to be the largest shippers of Welsh tin plates to Australasia, telegraphed to Mr. Bond, Unionist candidate for Carmarthen, on the eve of the by-election, stating that as Australia and Australian workers wore anxious to confine their trade to the Alotherlaud, the electors should choose Mr. Bond and so help Imperial and colonial preference. THE GERMAN ELECTIONS. Berlin, January 24. The Centre and Conservatives command 188 seats, and the Socialists, Radicals, and Liberals 176. THE OPIUM CONVENTION. The Hague, January 24. Germany, the United States, China, France, Britain, Italy, Japan, Holland, Persia, Portugal, Russia, and Siam have signed the opium convention. THE ARIZONA CASE. Brussels, January 24. Replying to a question, the Alinister for Foreign Affairs stated the Government was unaware that the officers of the Arizona contemplated an illegal act, and are now enquiring whether it is possible to prosecute the owner and captain. PERSIA’S PREDICAMENT. Paris, January 24. Air. Alorgan Shuster has informed an American interviewer that Persia’s
salvation rests with England, who alone is able to check Russian encroachments. SENSATIONAL SEIZURE. Tangier, January 24. A sensation has been caused through Spanish troops seizing agricultural land between Laraqhe and Alcazar, which the Sultan leased to a French firm. Spain- contests the legality of the lease, alleging that the .land is within the Spanish zone. ,
