ALLEGED ILLEGAL OPERATION,
Auckland, January 19
•At the Police Court to-day Suhannah Hamblyn, charged with performing an illegal operation on September 4, was committed for trial. Bail was allowed in two sureties of £l6O and accused’s own bond of £3OO.
REFORM PARTY RALLY.
Auckland, January 19
The Reform Party’s rally to be held in the Town Hall on Wednesday promises to be the largest political gathering of its kind ever held in the Dominion. Sixteen members of Parliament at least will be present, the principal speaker being Mr Massey. A very large number of tickets have already been issued, and demands, for more are coming from all parts of New Zealand. j:
NAPIER-GISBORNE RAILWAY

It has been definitely decided that the first sod of the Napier-Gisborne railway will be officially turned jit tho Napier end towards the close of this month, probably on the 29th. The ceremony will be attended • by Sir v Joseph Ward and tho Hon. R. McKenzie. ,

At about 10.20 p.m. yesterday tjie radio-telegraph station at Wellington heard the radio-telegraph station recently erected at Macquarie Island calling various stations, but was unable to communicate with that station. The distance from Macquarie Island to Wellington is approximately 1100 miles.
SERIOUS MOTOR ACCIDENT.

At a quarter to five this afternoon a motor car accident occurred in front of Warner’s hotel, when a car driven by Reginald Blunden, of Bennett’s, turned from Colombo Street towards Warner’s Hotel. lAn elderly man named Thomas Ryan hesitated, and the car ran into him, knocking him over. He sustained severe - injuries to his spine, and his left leg was broken. He was taken to the hospital, where ho died at 8.30.

The result of the ballot taken recently by the electors on the register of the Canterbury district court of convocation for the position on the University Senate, rendered vacalit by the death of James Hay, is as follows:—James Hight 151, Oscar Thorwald Johann Alpers 132, informal 3. Dr. Hight, professor of Economics and History at Canterbury College, is therefore elected.
SEAMEN’S WAGES,
Dunedin, January 19. The “Star” estimates, as an outcome of the Shipping Conference, that payments to workers by shipowner* will represent an annual expenditure equal to £150,000. In addition tt> the advances granted in the wharf labourers’ wages, cooks, and stewards, and members of the Merchants’ Service Guild also receive advances. The shipowners and the Seamen’s Union are now engaged settling what increases are to be given to firemeii and seamen. It is rumoured that oversea shipowners are already taking steps to increase inward freight rates by a, shilling a ton. SAWMILL DESTROYED. Invercargill, January 19. Pimpany Bros.’ mill at Seaward Bush was destroyed by a hush fire. It was insured for £7OO. A cpnj siderable length of tramway was destroyed.
