CAPTAIN’S MIRACULOUS ESCAPE
FISHERMEN’S GALLANT EFFORTS
(By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright.) (United Press Association.) (Received 20, 8.5 a.m.) London, January 19. 'The Westowhall left Jarrow on Monday. Heavy seas destroyed her funnel, broke her boats and extinguished the fires in the engine room, and she drifted helplessly. The crew were foodless and drinkless for three days. They were unable to reach the forecastle, and huddled in the engineroom. She then struck. The Port Errol lifeboat made gallant efforts to rescue the crew, who were clinging to ropes, ventilators, and derricks. The breakers rendered rescue impossible, Fishermen waded into the boiling surf knee-deep and dragged ashore Captain Stoddart and three Lascars. Stoddart revived after an hour’s artificial respiration. He stated that he was confined to the cabin with a broken arm and interna] injuries at the time of the foundering. He remembered nothing of events until he found himself ashore.
