GERMAN ELECTIONS.
GREAT INTEREST TAKEN: ■ HEAVY POLLING. BIG SOCIALIST GAINS. Berlin, January 13. The polling at the election was heavy. The Socialists hold live scats in Berlin, and expect at the second ballot to wrest a sixth from the Radicals. Herr Bchel, leader of the Socialists, Ledebour, Zudeal, David Vollman, and Dr. Frank were triumphantly reelected. Herr Bcrsnin wrested the Breslau West seat from the Radicals, and the latter lost Stettin, and the town of Konigsberg, the towns of Zittan and Bremen to the Socialists. Other Socialist victories are Megdeburg, Randow, Hohenlmden, and the first division of Brunswick. The Centre Party lost Riechenbach and Lurode to the Socmlists, and the National Liberals lost Kirchberg, Dobeln and Aundberg divisions in Saxony and Isslangen, Darmstadt West, and Havelland to the Socialists. The latter has already regained onethird of the losses of 1907, and have altogether 19 gains and only two losses. Despite all threats Hamburg retained’ 49 of the Centre Party. 45 Socialists, 9 Conservatives, and 8 Poles. Two of the Imperial Party and one National Liberal are definitely elected. NATIONAL LIBERALS AND RADICAL SUFFER. NUMEROUS SECOND BALLOTS. (Received 15, 8.5 a.in.) Berlin, January 11. The present state of parties is— Centre 85, Socialists 05, National Liberals G, Poles and Danes 10. A hundred and eighty-nine second ballots will he held, the Socialists are interested in a hundred and seventeen, and the Radicals in 53. The Socialists hope to win 40. They claim that they have gained 57,000 votes in Berlin, and increased the vote in the provinces by 32 per cent. ' The Socialist successes are largely at the expense of the Radicals and National Liberals. Much depends on the bargains for mutual support in the second ballots. The Catholic Centre Party is unshaken at present.
