Mr Henniker Heaton, in an inter-j view, stated that Sir Joseph Ward had| boon a great advocate of cheaper j cables, and had never failed to use ill the eloquence of his power and to lifer large subsidies binding Now Zealand with the outside world. The deferred cable concessions, he said, ,vere too amusing to contemplate! when one realised that there were sixteen cables between England and America, capable of carrying 225,000,000 words per annum, while only 20000,000 were sent. It was asserted, md not contradicted, that six to ton if these lines were kept idle by the cable ring. Vested interests were the only obstacle in the way of shilling cables.
