OUT EAST.

(By Our Travelling Reporter.)

A new building, comprising two shops, is at present in course of erection in Whanga township hy Mr. Hodder. It will be occupied by Mr. Sutherland (restaurant), and Messrs. Manoy and Hass-all (drapers). More slips have occurred on the road at the back of the Ngatimaru railway station, and are on the eastern end of the Kioro railway tunnel. The railway men are busy removing the latter. Other slips are reported from all parts of the district. A trip through the Whanga tunnel at present is not a pleasant one. The workmen have all left, and the lights are all out, and all that remains : s mud and slush nearly knee deep. It is anticipated that the rails will ho laid through in about a fortnight’s time.

Mr. M. A; Hunter, of the Bank of Australasia, has be'en transferred to Wavorlcy. Mr; Collingwood, of the, Ma.naia "branch, replaces him,The,remains of the Whaugamomona Hotel, which was ;destroyed by lira some months ago, have now been removed,' and 'preparations, are. being made .for the newbuilding, which, will he started as soon as the necessary material can come to hand. The Whangamomona Saddle is in such a bad state that the genial “Charlie” Benjamin has deemed it advisable to discontinue running the mail coach for the present, as the saddle is unsafe, and ho has substituted a Cortland waggon. The saddle is in a worse condition now than it ims .seen for many years. - ((’The -annual, New' Year dance will.be ; held in the' Kohuratahi Hall on Monday next! 1 ' ' _ ; - v - ;• ■_ " Christmas passed off very quiet iu Whangamomona, nearly everyone having availed themselves- of tne opportunity of getting away from the land of mud to spend their Christmas' elsewhere. A cannon-ball could befired down the street on Boxing Hay without the slightest fear of Hitting anybody, and tne only little amusement tne few remaining survivors had was a dog light, winch lasted for several minutes. One old E-ntlc-inan, whose sympathies were with the beaten dog, strolled quietly up to separate tne contestants, and lor so doing received a neat Ititle “nip” on the ringer, with the result that ho strolled quietly away in disgust, holding his bleeding linger, and the dogs stul fought on. Mr H. Jakes, of the Royal Mail Stables, has just imported from Australia, the latest and most up-to-date cordial plant on the market, and has the same temporarily elected and m full working order. Whanga’s need in the soft drink lino can now more than he supplied, and we wish him every success in ins undertaking. A" waggon, belonging to Messrs Court and Cottier, while proceeding along the Whanga saddle on Saturday, loaded with goods, got slightly nto difficulties, and was somewhat dismantled, with the result that the driver had to return with the horses only. Mr E. W. Hodder is the successful contractor for the erection of the new Whangamomona Hotel. .
