KOHURATAHI NOTES.
(From Our Own Correspondent.)
Christmas passed olt’ very quietly in Kohuratahi. Heavy rain set in on Christmas Eve and continued over Christmas Day, so most people kept indoors.
The Marco school closed last week for the holidays. The breaking-up was celebrated by a grand picnic during the day, and a dance at night, both of which passed off very successfully. The school-mistress, Miss Wilson", has left to spend her holidays in the South Island. Mr A. Cornwall has, I hear, purchased another farm in the Whitianga Valley, along with all stock, etc., as a going concern. Shearing is still going on in intermittant style here, several farmers not having finished who started nearly a month ago. The weather has been all against the making of even fair shearing cheques this season. Farmers here, after last season's severe lesson, are turning their attention towards providing winter feed for stock, and all along he roads ploughed paddocks are to be seen, ready for turnip crops in the autumn. Lucerne is also being grown in small areas. Some patches I have seen promise well for a bountiful crop of winter feed. Mr J. Walker, with his wife and family, are on a visit here from Mangapih'i. Mr Walter intends settling here permanently next summer on his farm.
A New Year social and dance will ho held in the Hall on Monday, dannary Ist. As this will bo practically the only holiday attraction in the district, the commtitee anticipate a very successful evening. Miss F. Hill is home again from the Hawera High School, where she has just succeeded in passing her Civil Service examination, also securing a three years’ scholarship. Her success is deserving of every congratulation, and reflects great credit on the school here, which was responsible for her early education.
