BOXING.
FLYNN BEATS CAPONI
.'By Electric Telegraph.—Copyrigi t.) (United Press Association.) (lleceivd 29, 8.5 a.in.) New York, December 28. At Salt Lake City Jim Flynn knocked out Tony Caponi in throe rounds of the scdeduled ten-round fight. ELTHAM SPORTS AND PASTIMES CLUB. OFFICIAL OPENING. The above club was officially opened on Boxing Night, to a good and appreciative audience, and, considering the counter attractions and the obstacles the club lias had to contend with, the committee should congratulate itself on the success of its first endeavour. The ball opened with a local novice competition which ended in a draw. Several of the local men, though possessing the ability to put up a creditable performance if they only knew it, seemed diffident about appearing in public owing to their being only a short time under tuition. The gem of the evening was undoubtedly the bout between Wing Kee, of Midhirst, and Harvey, of Hawera, (late amateur champion of Yorkshire), which was decided in favour of the former. Lovers of the game received a pleasant surprise at those men’s showing, and the exhibition they gave was well worth the price of admiss’on. It was a real willing goodnatured “go,” and old “Dad” Stagpoolo must have been hard put to it to decide, but Harvey, with so many past honours to his credit, did not begrudge seeing a young hand at the game given the decision for the splendid fight lie put up. With experience and training, a! id hist possesses the coining middle-weight champion of New Zealand, as, besides considerable skill, Wing Kee possesses the gift of being able to hike severe punishment and not know lie is getting' it. A clever wrestling exhibition between Prechner, of Stratford, and Laing, a Swiss champ on, followed, at the conclusion of wh’oli Prcchner gave a body-posing display which was very fine. Syme (of Stratford) and Dunn (of Midhirst) took the floor next, resulting in a win for Dunn, which bout was followed by one between Foley (of •Puniwbakan) and Sohreider (of Tariki). , Foley got in a knock-out blow before the fight had lasted a minute, and Schreidor being counted out, Foley won the bout. He is a smart little boxer of whom more will be heard later. To wind up a really enjoyable evening, Preclmor and Wing Kee _ gave two 2-minute rounds exhibitie . spars. The club desire to thank so many For helping to the success of the evening that it is hard to know where to start and stop, and so probably it is bast'to say very little, but the committee is really very grateful to the Stratford friends especially, who came along arid helped so willingly. The club hopes to be Jiaving another tournament about Easter, and hold a proper Taranaki championship meeting for all weights and classes. Harvey has expressed his willingness to spar lanyone from 10 stone to .10 stone 71b, whilst Wing Kee is arixrons to go for thei middle-weightichampionship of Taranaki,’ so those events will probably be arranged. The club has also received promises of assistance from leading New Zealand champions, so a good time can be looked for.
