THE HALF-HOLIDAY.

(To the Editor “Stratford Post.”) Sir,—Jn last evening’s issue of the “Post” the secretary of the Chamber of Commerce replies to a letter written by a momboV of the Retailers’ Association dated December 23rd. He appears surprised that anyone should magine for a moment that the Chamber is working for Saturday. To my mind it lias been pretty apparent from the first which day the Chamber favoured, and i judge principally by tho reports which have appeared in the paper. The retailors and the public are both satisfied with Thursday. Then, why tliis agitation by the Chamber of Commerce? Why not let eaeli town select its own half-holiday as at present? If New Plymouth and Waitara favour Saturday, why have they not selected it? Then, again, the secretary refers to a Stratford list. The fact of the matter is that a list taken round, as was done in Stratford, docs not properly reflect the opinion on this matter by those who would ho most effected by any change. 1 refer to the bona fide retailers, employees, land agents, builders, accountants, bankers, solicitors, etc., who will probably favour a Saturday half-holiday, but this neither suits the public nor the retailor. Saturday is the day specially adapted for shopping, or it would not have become the great shopping day all over the world. Bankers at present close on Saturday and the law allows any business to select Saturday if they prefer it io Thursday—all they have to do is to give the required notice, flit? Retailers’ Association lately passed a resolution in favour of retaining Thursday. This certainly does not look as chough Stratford wants any change.— i am. etc., ANOTHER RETAILER. Stratford, December 29th, 1911.
