Wellington, December 28

Whilst sitting on a rock paddling her feet in the water at Island Bay yesterday a little girl was attacked by an octopus. Attracted by her cries her father found three tentacles wound tightly round the girl’s leg, and she was being gradually drawn into the water. The father’s strength proved unavailing to extricate the child, but with the assistance of three ladies, the octopus was beaten off, and the girl rescued.

Hamilton, December 28. Early on Tuesday morning a fir© broke out in the rear of the main Government sanatorium buildings, completely destroying the stables and harness and feed" rooms. The horses were not in the stable when the outbreak occurred. The damage is estimated at £9OO. The origin is a mystery.
