THE MACQUARIES.
RETURN OF A SHIPWRECKED CREWSEVERAL SHEEP LANDED. Hobart, December 27. The steamer Toroa, from Macquarie Island, brought the captain and crew of Hatch’s schooner, the Clyde, which was wrecked on the island, also a quantity of oil and some sails. These and some other salvage, though very little was saved from the wreck, will bo shipped to New Zealand. r l ho boat went ashore in the early morning, and drifting close in the crow reached the land safely, with little difficulty. By the Toroa, Dr. Mawson sent an interesting account of the doings of the party. On the island they found sea leopards, sea elephants, penguins, and giant petrels. Maori lions and wild cats were abundant, and fish plentiful. The party had no difficulty in obtaining abundant food supplies. Fifty-five sheep were landed from the Toroa. There is plenty of feed on the island, consisting of long grass and circular cabbage, wherewith the island is densely clothed. A wireless station is erected on a headland several foot above sea level.
