MINISTER AND SCHOOL.

A TEACHER’S STATEMENT. At the Education Board meeting on Tuesday night, the chairman said he had received the following letter in connection with the Oeo school from the teacher, Mrs M. A. Brereton, under ‘date- November 22nd:—“To-day the Hon. Tims. Mackenzie, now Minister of Education, held a meeting here. Mr Mudford, chairman of the School Committee, and I happened to ho discussing the prospective school and its non-appearance. The Hon. Tims. Mackenzie told us to write to your Board and inform you that il you put in the application for a grant for the new school and residence at once, he would pass it before the. election. Might I urge upon the Board the wisdom of doing so immediately on receipt of this? We are suffering excessively from headaches for reasons before stated. Mr Hikaka is away just now, hut 1 understand from what Mrs Hikaka tells me that she and her two sisters have signed the plan made by the surveyor, Mr Stewart. Even if this lie not so, the application for the grant must he made at once, and will ho passed all the same; the Hon. T. Mackenzie said so.”

Mr Trimble .said tliat lie line! hold tlia latter over until after the election, ar> he did not desire that the

school should he made an election matter. Ho said that lie had written to Mr Young stating that personally ho found it difficult to hcliove that the Minister really made the statement implied to him. If he did it was a very improper thing to tic.. On the other hand, if he had not made it, he would he the first to approve of the action he had taken. Mr Morton said that he had also received a similar letter from the teacher. .
