Whangarci, December 20. The police have been advised that William Bishop, gumdigger, was found dead near Kirikiri, Bay of Islands. He had been ill, had wandered. away, and had died of exposure. Auckland, December 20.
Ernest Auger, aged 34, was cycling down Remuera Road, when the front wheel of his bicycle became detached, and Auger foil heavily, suffering severe injuries to his head and one of his jaws. He was removed to the hospital unconscious, and died later.
J ohn Alexander McConnell was riding in a taxi driven by a.man named Batty alongvtho beach road, when .he met two horses, which the driver states were unattended. To avoid colliding with them he turned the car sharply, with the result that it struck a tramway pole. McConnell jumped, or was thrown out of the car. He was conveyed to the hospital unconscious, and lie died tliere two hours later. McConnell is aged 36, and was employed as an accountant. He leaves a wife and family of young children. Hastings, December 20. A meeting was held in Hastings yesterday afternoon for the purpose of forming a branch of the' N.Z. Sports Protection League. Sixty were present, representing all branches of sport. It. was decided to form a Hawke’s B;iv Centre. There

.The City Council had a discussion last night over a request by the Tramways Union to remove an inspector. The Appeal Board decided against this official in a case which be had brought against an employee by .a majority of one. The Council, in committee, decided to transfer the inspector to another, position, on the ground of want of tact. Further discussion followed, and the resolution was upheld by the casting vote of the Mayor. Notice was immediately given to rescind the motion. During the debate mention was made of threats by the union, which were denied; but it is also stated that the Union has held meetings on the subject, and ii the Council does not take action which satisfies them, further meetings will follow. A new, and, for the school teachers of the Wellington Education district, more convenient system of monthly payment of salaries is to bo adopted. Under the present arrangement the teachers are paid by separate cheques sent from the head office, Wellington, to the headmasters, who distribute them to the staff. Under the new system each amount will be deposited monthly at the Bank of Now Zealand. The Bank will arrange for the distribution of credits to brandies. Head teachers will present cheques (supplied by the Government) to the staffs, who will present their own drafts to the hank and receive their due salaries. To-day Frederick’ William Green formerly clerk and libran’an of the Wellington Workingmen’s Club and Literary Institute, was committed foi trial on a charge of stealing £175 15l 9d of the club funds. Bail was al lowed.
Granville Hunt, formerly in business here as an indent agent, who has been wanted since duly last year and was arrested at Kihikihi on Monday, war to-day charged with having in July 1910, forged the name of W. H. Nash to a promissory note for £159 7 S and uttered the same to Wright, Stevenson and Co. lie was remanded until December 27tb. Bail, £l5O, was allowed.
