Mrs Kauffmann, wife of a wealthy commission agent, was murdered as she returned from a theatre with her husband. A Chicago chauffeur has confessed ho was aware tho party would be held up, and the woman was shot because she screamed.
AN IMPORTANT INVENTION
London. December 12
The Westminster Gazette states chat Mr A. T. Johnson, ex-professor of the Royal Academy of Music, an Australian, is collaborating with Mr F. Varlcy, who assisted to lay the first successful Atlantic cable. After nine years’ experimenting he has perfected a 'system of tuned metal rods, connected with similarly’ tuned re-
ceivers, which can be applied to either cable or wireless telegraphy. The invention prevents tapping, and enables an unlimited number of keyboards, resembling typewriters, to send messages simultaneously, and, with a current of three volts, conveys a message from London to New York, now requiring forty volts. The British Government has opened negotiations to purchase the invention.
RAILWAY CONFERENCE

Both sides of tho railway conference accepted a scheme practically as embodied in the report. The companies made a concession in other matters, including the status of casual labourers.

In the divorce case, Statham v. Statham and Gaekwar, of Baroda, the Court reserved its decision as to whether Gaekwar, being a foreign ruling prince, was immune from .proceedings.

Modifications made in connection with tho railway conference will Tend to speeding the work of the conciliation* boards. Each company settles the increase of wages and reduction of hours, giving an answer in writing within six weeks oft -a petition by 25 per cent, of tiie ’ employees of any grade. The boards meet next May. Alterations will not operate till July.
It was agreed that casual hands be paid hourly ’ rates, nOt> lower than the minimum of permanent men. The men’s leaders are confident of their ability to persuade the employees to accept the terras.

A bomb was thrown at Liege. It was filled with nails. Some of tho victims had their legs blown off. Fifty wore injured. Verveck, the supposed author of the Leige outrage, died of his wounds. The bomb was loaded with gunpowder. The victims mostly belonged to the working class, including many girls. The incident has aroused fears of a renewal of the outrages of seventeen years ago, when Leige was the centre of anarchism.
