AN IMPORTANT INVENTION

The Westminster Gazette states chat Mr A. T. Johnson, ex-professor of the Royal Academy of Music, an Australian, is collaborating with Mr F. Varlcy, who assisted to lay the first successful Atlantic cable. After nine years’ experimenting he has perfected a 'system of tuned metal rods, connected with similarly’ tuned re-

ceivers, which can be applied to either cable or wireless telegraphy. The invention prevents tapping, and enables an unlimited number of keyboards, resembling typewriters, to send messages simultaneously, and, with a current of three volts, conveys a message from London to New York, now requiring forty volts. The British Government has opened negotiations to purchase the invention.

The bomb was loaded with gunpowder. The victims mostly belonged to the working class, including many girls. The incident has aroused fears of a renewal of the outrages of seventeen years ago, when Leige was the centre of anarchism.
