WHARF WORKERS’ STRIKE,
(Per Press Association.) Timaru, December 11. On Friday last the wharf workers submitted demands to the shipping agents, the most important being for an increase of pay frprn the current •.rates of Is 6d an hour arid 2s overtime for all work to Is 9d and 2s 6d for general cargo/ and 2s and 3s for coal, guano, frozen meat, etc. They asked for a conference at 10 a.m. to-day. The employers on Saturday submitted an alternative until a general conference for tiie Dominion early next year, of the old rate for general cargo, 3d extra for ordinary and overtime for foreign, coal, manures and frozen meat in the hold. At the conference to-day the employers offered an increase on New Zealand coal to Is 71 d and 2s lid, and also some concessions on general conditions. Several of the men’s demands, being considered impracticable, were refused, and the employers declining further concessions tiie men ceased work at noon.
The Wairuna, discharging coal, - loft with 150 tons undischarged. , The Averlcy, with a cargo of Oregon timber, will discharge by its Chinese crew. The. Pakeiia arrived to load 2000 bales of wool, and is still anchored in the roadstead awaiting orders. The" Blackball collier, due here, will not come, and the regular Union steamers will avoid Timaru till the strike is settled.

NATIVE CHILD KILLED
Gisborne, December 12
A native child, Wi Raureti, aged 12, was killed by a fall of earth near Xuhukii.
