The General Elections.

A CHEAT CROWD. Nearly three thousand people assembled' last night in front of the County Hotel, and interest in the results. ran .to a tremendous pitch of excitement. Hour after hour the crowd remained watching the screen, long after the local election had become a tiling of the past. It was interesting to note the -reception given the candidates as their triumphs appeared on the sheet. 'All got cheered, whether Government, Opposition, or Independent, but there were no two receptions alike. It was long after midnight before the show ended, and up to the very last the crowd kept to their cheers. Never before has Stratford experienced such an election ni—ht.

SPEECHES OF THANKS. After the final - total was put on the screen, both candidates addressed the crowd in the street below. Mr Hine spoke first, and was greeted with considerable applause when he .stepped forward. He said:— “Ladies and gentlemen,—l must express my” (uproar). We are taking it very easy (laughter). I want to thank you all for the honour you have conferred upon me—(still more applause and not a few groans). 1 greatly appreciate the honour again conferred upon me. (Turning to Mr McCluggage) and here we are together, friends; friends as we ought to be, and friends we always hope to be. (More cheers.) And I hope to do my duty in the future. I hope to have the help of all of you. I hope to push Stratford along as it deserves—as it ought to be pushed along. And may we all pull together. Hie elections are over- 1 look forward it is my duty to do the best for the district. And now the fight is over I ask you to give three hearty cheers for Mr McCluggage. (Long and prolonged applause and the cheers Mr Hine asked for, together with three hig ones for, himself. Mr McCluggage met with an enthusiastic reception. “Ladies and gentlemen,” he said, “we are beaten, we are fairly beaten . But I may tell you this—l am going to start from tonight (applause) till next election, and I thank all my committees very sincerely for the very great amount of hard work they have put into the election. I would like very much on this occasion to especially thank the ladies .and I want to.thank my opponents for the manly and straightforward way they have fought the battle. After all, we have to do the very best for own country. I thank you all again—all the ones who did support me and all those who did not support me.” He called for cheers for Mr Hine and the ceremony ended amidst great entluisiasm.

HONOURING THE VICTOR. Soon after the result of the local contest was known, Mr Hine motored down to Inglewood, returning to Stratford about midnight. When ho was recognised he was given a great reception, and on alighting he was lifted shoulder high and paraded up and down before the hotel. Cheers were given for him and also for Mr Me Cluggage. PROMPT RETURNS. The management of the “Stratford Evening Post” had made excellent arrangements for displaying the* results as they came to hand, and, with the hearty co-operation of the Deputy Registrar of Electors (Mr F. Bird), it was nossible to show the returns with great promptitude. The district is a fairly scattered one, and some returning officers had to travel some distance to reach means of communi-

Mr. Hine Re-elected for Stratford. The Electors give the Victor a highly Enthusiastic Reception. V THE OPPOSITION GAIN A NUMBER OF SEATS. SEVERAL SECOND , BALLOTS TO BE DECIDED A WEEK HENCE.

The polling details at Stratford at last election were as follows: —

/uuiiuif- Hi* ' - • cation with Stratford, hut all seem to have been well schooled their dirties and inspired with the necessity of getting the retxirns to Stratford as early as posibles. Be that as it may, the whole of the figures for the Stratford electorate had been shown by 9.15 p.m., which is claimed to be a record for a country constituency. In addition to having by organisation greatly lightened the work of the press, Mr Bird was also obliging in the extreme in making figures available, thereby lessening the worry and delay too often supposed to_ be inseparable from a general election. In this connection a word of praise is due to Messrs McAlister and Clayton, who manipulated the lantern by which the figures were projected, and who at times had to work hard to keep up with the ever-arriving returns. THE LIQUOR VOTING.

Considerable interest was taken in the voting on the liquor question, several polling booths, as will be seen on reference to the table displaying substantial majorities in favour of nolicense and national prohibition. The final totals on both issues were very close, and in the case of national prohibition only eighteen votes were required to carry the proposal, while 42,8 more votes only were required to , carry local no-license. LAST ELECTION. STRATFORD’S POLLING.

INDICNANT NEGLIGENT VOTERS. Many voters yesterday were surprised to find their names erased from the rolls. In most cases, liowevci, they have themselves to blame, and Mr Bird, the Deputy-Registrar of Electors, states that no names had been struck off without reason— people wbo neglected to answer the registered letters sent them had only themselves to blame.

THE WOMEN'S REST. The Women’s Best provided by the W.C.T.U., and presided over by Mrs Helen Mackay and other ladies, was largely used and much appreciated by mothers who desired to vote at yesterday’s poll. WHO WI CL WSM ? In almost every office in town calculations were being made this morning as to the state of tho parties. For the bonlit of those whose business does not permit of these engrossing calculations, wo give a few particulars of oiir own investigations. In the first place, then, all that is now known for certain may be summed up as follows : Opposition have ... 22 seats. Government ... 16 seats. Independents ... 3 scats. Tnd. Liberals ... 1 seat. Second ballots ... 29 Doubtful ... ... 6

Beyond this it is very hard to ascertain even an approximate statement of how the parties will eventually come out. The result of many second ballots can be stated with almost certainty. But he would lie a bold man to state that Mr. Hogg, for instance, will represent Masterton, when he is over one thousand votes to the had when the totals of the two Opposition candidates are combined. Will Mr. Fisher retain his seat? He has a lead of only 90 votes on tho Government candidate, and the others in the contest were Labour and Socialists respectively. Interest in the Christchurch North electorate has boon very keen for several reasons. Mr. Hitt, tho staunch prohibitionist, has a lead of over five hundred over Mr. Hall. Will the votes of Mr. Potherick, one of the strongest liquor advocates, go to Mr. Hall ? It is argued that Mr. Potherick being a Government man, his votes will pass to Mr. Isitt. However, one may look at it, it is a decided change from last election, when the state of the parties was— Government -51 Opposition ... ... 25 Independent 3 Labour ... ... ... 1
