Brisbane; December 1. The body of a black gin, shot through the head and prepared for burial, was found in the blacks camp at Bundabcrg. The deceased’s husband is missing, and the police are searching for him. Melbourne, December 1.
Davis, the champion hurdler, is unable to visit New Zealand for the ath letic championships, owing to examinations on the date of the meeting. Sydney, December 1. In •the Assembly the Government introduced the Income Tax Bill. The proposals provide for the payment by a company of Is 2d in the £ on the income chargeable. By a private person, where the income chargeable does not exceed £7OO, 6d in the £, with the
addition of one-third if an absentee, and a further additional one-third on such of the income as is derived from the produce of property. By a person whose income chargeable exceeds £7OO, all over £7OO and under £I7OO, 6d; over £I7OO and under £2700, 8d; over £9700, Is. All carry an additional third for an absentee, and an additional or further additional third for such of the income as is derived from the produce of property. A further exemption of £5(3 is made for each child under 16 years dependent on the taxpayer. Mr Wade opposed the Bill, on the ground that taxation was always passed to the small man. The Bill was' read a first time.
The Assembly, referred to the Public Works Committee Mr Griffiths (Minister of Public Works) alternative schemes for linking the city with North Sydney.! The first is a subway under the harbour, costing £1,388,000, the second a bridge at a cost of £l,592,000, and the third a State ferry costing £IBO,OOO. Mr Griffiths also carried a motion empowering an increase of the output of the State brick works to a million bricks weekly, at an estimated cost of £38,000. ,'nh.n A fire at Marrickville destroyed one and damaged two adjoining houses. A lady, who was sleeping alone where the outbreak occurred, was disturbed by two burglars, who got away with a quantity of loot. Immediately afterwards the outbreak was discovered. It is presumed the burglars started the fire.
The High Court reserved its decision in the Peacock murder case. (Received 2, 9.10 a.m.) Melbourne, December 2. The secretary of the Steamship Owners’ Federation declares that the seamen’s award will cost the companies £IOO,OOO annually, and would probably result in increased freights. In view of unfavourable reports from the telephone export, the Government is sending three leading officials to England and America to investigate up-to-date methods. The falling-off in the postal revenue for the first live months of the financial year exceeded the estimate by £20,000. The Customs revenue is over half a million in excess of last year.
