COUNTY COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. Tim monthly meeting of the County Council was held yesterday morning. Present: Crs. Marfoll, Walter, Rogers, Young, Thomson, Christoffel, Smith, Hathaway, Anderson.
Regarding a proposed alteration of boundary, tho Clifton County Clerk wrote tliat tho matter had been referred to bis now Council. Lister Bros., Gordon Road, wrote, asking if tfie Council would do something regarding tho drain running ui front- of their section.—Referred to tJio Engineer. F. Stevens, Toko, wrote stating that ho could not accept the position of foreman at Douglas.—Received. A. Askew, Denbigh Road, offered to sell the Council about 40 yards of spawlcd metal at 3s a yard.—Left in cue hands of the Engineer. Cr. Smith gave notice to move that £‘so be voted from the West Riding Suecial Fund for the Cardiff-Wamgo-
agoro. Ino Under-Secretary for Lands advised that the Council should convey to the Crown the portion of closed road proposed to be added to the \Vaipuku Cometcry.—ilecei ved. Tim Secretary of the Toko Assembly Hall Society forwarded a resolution passed by ids Society 7, thanking the Council for its help in getting the Coronation subsidy tor me hall.— Received.
H. Watson, Douglas, forwarded an objection to 350 acres of his land being included in the Makuri Valley drainage area.—Tne special order dealing with the matter was confirmed.
Dalgcty and Co., Wellington, wrote offering to sell tiie Council three traction road waggons, capable ol carrying 12 tons (about 8 cubic yards of metal). —No action. The Eltham County Clerk wrote that i;is Council had agreed co take over the control of tile Mangawhero:ii Bridge, naif the cost of repairs to bo borne by the Stratford Council.— Received. The following motion was passed on the motion of Cr. Thomson; That amounts as follows be voted from the South Hiding Special Fund—Lower Bird Road £IOO, South Climis Hoad £SO, South Skinner Hoad £SO. The Minister for Public Works (Hon. 11. McKenzie) wrote, under date October 21st., that the representations regarding a grant of £350 for metalling on Mangaehu Hoad would receive consideration. —The Engineer said no grant had been made. Mr. J. McClnggage wrote that lie would pledge himself, if elected, to support and assist the Government in introducing a comprehensive Local Government Bill.—Received. E. Vickers, Midhirst, wrote stating that the Council’s foreman had been taking boulders from his section without jnning anything. He asked for his share of royalty.—Left to Cr. Rogers to report. Tiie Town Clerk wrote regarding a nuisance in Swansea Hoad caused by a culvert. The Borough Council recommended the County Council to ask Mr. Brake to pull down a weir on his laud, thus abating the nuisance.—Referred to Cr. Thomson to report. W. H. Stocklcy, Kiore, asked that a few pounds be spent on the Mangao-apa-Matau Roads, to keep them in order until taken over by the Chiton Comity Council.—Cr. Walter said the damage was chiefly done by Chiton County traffic.—lt’ was decided to spend £5 on the road. Tiie Superintendent of the State Guaranteed Advances Ofliee wrote that the Board had declined to agree to the differential rating proposal in connection with the loan for draining Maknri Valley, so that tiie first provisional approval for one special rate to he struck still holds good.—Engineer to call for tenders for the work to bo done. (). .1. Cbainey, Aiuiroa Road, wrote as follows under date October 26th ; “There have been two cows wandering on the Ahuroa Road for some weeks past now. I got my son to lot Mr. Outhbortson know,' as lie was going to the factory some days ago, and he (Mr. Cuthbertson) took no notice, and ao-ain I asked my boy to see him. This be did, and when the boy told him that the settlers were going to make a complaint to the Council he said the settlers could go to r . Well, now, if this is the way lie is going to treat us he had better bo removed from the job. Hoping you- will see that the ranger does bis duty or remove him.—l am, etc.”—Referred to the ranger for an explanation. The Resident Road Engineer, Now Plymouth (Mr. G. T. Murray) wrote that the £ls proposed to lie allowcc. to the contractor on contract 811 could not he paid to the County s credit.—Cr. Walter said the position was serious to local bodies, who had to spend Government grants in full, and had in addition to pay any expense such as the one in question, and the cost of administration m spending the money. There was always trouble with slips, and a small man might be ruined if he was compelled to clear them at-his own expense. Further, if contractors were compelled to clear them they v onld put up their contract prices enor-mously.—-It was decided to urge on tiie Government the necessity ol making provision for such payments, and also providing administration expenses. _____________
